Project 10 Pan

Every year, I start off with a few days of rest, then cleaning everything up for a fresh start. This year was no exception to that, except, I realised that my few "sneaky purchases" ended up being more like a lot of very expensive, unnecessary purchases.

I originally thought that I would put myself on a spending ban and not buy makeup for say a month or 2, but then I realised that previously after my ban was over, I went and spent excessively which resulted in more stuff which I'm having trouble keeping (and since I'll be moving in summer, I'm already beginning to wonder what I'm going to do!)

Hence, I turned to the interwebs for tips for downsizing my makeup collection and the general consensus was throw out unused products, but that didn't work for me as all my makeup is relatively new (though I did choose a few products to toss).

Eventually I came across project 10 pan. It's one of those where the rules aren't clear and I can't seem to find who started it, but here it goes!

My rules:

1. I will not buy any more makeup unless that particular thing (eg foundation) is completely finished. If it's something like eyeshadow, I will use up the dupes in my collection before buying a new one. In this case, either I can choose a new product or my favourite one of the ones I've tried. I can buy one replacement only.

2. I will reward myself by adding a high-end product into my collection. In my crazy spending spree, I bought a bunch of makeup like the Naked palettes and haven't used them yet. I've decided not to use them until I've used up at least 10 products as I know I won't use the makeup I have already if I start using those! It's also a good initiative to remember this project! Most people would remove their spending ban, but I want to really downsize my collection first so I'm using a reward system instead!

3. If there is something that I really want, either a replacement (that I still have others of the same of, see rule 1) I will write it down in my notebook and see how I feel about the product once I've finished the other products. An example of this is the Benefit They're Real Mascara. I already know I want to repurchase it, but I have a lot of other mascaras to finish first!

4. I will post reviews of the things I finish on the blog! This is to make sure I don't get tetchy about not having things to blog about and also so that you (my lovely readers) can see my opinions after using a product up completely!

5. Anything can be considered an empty, including body butter and body scrubs, but not soap, shampoo, conditioner or single use masks. This is because I tend to use them up quite quickly anyway. Also, items that go off or I decide I don't want anymore because they're not that great, can't be considered. I have to actually use them!

More details:

I've decided to put aside a selection of products to focus on finishing. This is because I often use the same products anyway, but these are ones that are either getting old or are things I'd rather finish up.
I keep these separate from my large collection because I'm usually too lazy to dig up a certain product so by putting them aside I do use them more.

I depotted these into my Uni Palette (review to come) for ease of access. In here I have my absolute favourite contour powder which is the Barry M Matte Bronzing Powder which I have a backup of. This has quite a decent dip in it already so I'm excited to try and hit pan soon.

The small black one is a matte individual shadow from MUA in shade 20. It's ok. I used to use this to fill in my brows as it was what Klaire de Lys used on her brows in many videos, but recently I've been favoring a browner colour as I feel it suits me better. But I'm back to using this in an attempt to finish it. Wish me luck!

The last thing in the palette is the Soap & Glory Glow All Out Powder. I love this powder as a highlight and I use this almost every day. I  also have a backup of this as well as other highlighters I want to use as well so I want to use this up as quickly as I can.

Bronzers are things I don't use that often as I don't really know how to use them well. So in an attempt to figure things out I have the Bourjois Bronzing Primer (the first review on my blog here). I like this ok, but I'm still figuring out how to get it how I want it to every time.

The other product is the Natural Collection Sun Tint Bronzing Powder in Golden Glow. I got this a long time ago after watching many tutorials that used a bronzer as a contour (ahem NARS Laguna) and silly old me didn't know that products like this that are super shimmery and warm toned aren't the best for that. I generally use this on my eyes now, but I am not a fan to be honest. I think if I really can't find a good use for this I'll just get rid of it, because it tends to make me look like a brown disco ball. Not cute.

The Rimmel Scandal Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow in Rich Russet is relatively new in my collection, but as it is a liquid, I want to get more use of it before it dries up. Really like this for everyday so I think it should go quite well.

I'm also adding my Maybelline 24 hour Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze because I used this almost everyday at one stage. It has a nice dent already so it's quite satisfying.

2 lip products. The red is Maybelline Colour Sensational in Red Porcelain. I'm so scared of any colour on my lips besides nude-pinks or berry shades so I am trying to use this more around the house to get more used to colour. So far, I think it's going ok... Though it looks a bit weird when I answer the door with bright red lips while wearing baggy hoodies.

The other one is the Revlon Colour Burst Matte Balm in Elusive. Miss Budget Beauty (one of my favourite bloggers/Youtubers) really liked the one in Unapologetic but I didn't dare go for the bright colours (see above on red) so I got this one which is supposed to be quite nudey. For me, it feels too bright and I don't really use it. Also, for a time, I forgot I owned this. I've used quite a bit of this, so I did like it at one stage, so I'm hoping to fall back in love with this.

4 mascaras to work through. I am so far not a massive fan of the Soap &Glory Thick & Fast Mascara, as it works sometimes but doesn't work all the time. I've used this quite a bit, so this may be reviewed soon hopefully!

The Natural Collection Water Guard Mascara in Black/Brown is a repurchase. I love this for a really easy everyday one. It lasts quite well for me and it looks really natural, so I enjoy this for days when I don't want too much going on especially as I wear glasses.

Then we have the Clinique Bottom lash mascara. I gave a mini review on my Sephora haul here. Basically, as this is a more expensive mascara, I want to get as much use out of it as possible. I really really like this and am already planning to repurchase when my finances allow.

Then a sample of the Benefit They're Real! mascara. I like this a lot, and again, as it is a more expensive type product I want to get as much use of it as possible. This was a sample in a Birchbox. So far I really really love it, but I can't use this when I wear my glasses as they make my lashes so long they rub against the glasses. So I'm still considering if I really want to repurchase.

This are 6 Soap & Glory Superfabulipsticks which I got in the Girl O' Whirl set in 2013. I keep forgetting I own this as I need to use this with a lip brush. I have since put these in another Uni Palette.

Bit of a random picture. I have the 17 Eyes Trio in Enraged. I got this when I first got into makeup, so it is due a use! I kept forgetting I had this as I began to use palettes a lot more. So it's nice to start using it more. I love the golden shade on the top left!

Then I have a MUA cream blush in Dolly. It has been used a fair bit, as you can see, the writing has all come off.  I like this for an everyday shade. If I don't want to think too much and still want a touch of colour I use this. I want to use it up as it is a cream product.

Etude House Cotton Fit BB cream. This is nice. I like it a lot, and have a backup. Hard to get in the UK though, so I don't know what I'll do if I run out (ebay probably).

Also, the Etude House CC cream in Glow. I have a backup of this as well as one in Silky. This is great for under foundation or BB cream as a primer as well as on its own and I really enjoy it. Sometimes when I want a more matte look but still want a lit from within type of look I use this on the high points of my face and then put a matte foundation over top. Really nice effect.

This is my Victoria Jackson Eyes Have It palette. I like it, but it's not that great. It has sentimental value as it was the first makeup product I owned. It was a gift from my aunt and I remember using the little sponge applicators and thinking I looked amazing (I didn't.). It has a nice edit of colours though so I'm excited to use this more. I really like the bottom right shade which is dark purple plum colour that looks amazing smoked out.

On top I have the Victoria Jackson cream eyeshadow in Champagne. This is great for all over or as an inner corner highlight. I also use this to line the inner corner lower lashline to create the puppy eye effect that is really popular in Korea.

On the left I have the 17 Hide Away concealer in medium. This is my second tube, but the colour match isn't that great for me, so I end to use it on blemishes under foundation.

Then I have the Rimmel Match Perfection 2-in-1 concealer and highlight in 200 Soft Beige. I use this to brighten my under eye area.

Then I have the Milani Eyeshadow Primer. I got this while in New York. I like it and I'm glad I have a backup of this. I use this every day except when I use the Maybelline Colour Tattoo or the Rimmel liquid eyeshadow.

Finally the last one is the 17 Pwoar Paint in Medium. It is the first product I've ever hit pan on so I'm excited to finish this soon!

2 brow products. I have a clear mascara from the Little Mix by Collection in Leigh-Anne's clear. It's ok. It sets my brows when I use a powder. I also have the Maybelline Brow Drama in Medium Brown. I love this for a really easy brow look. I also use this when I've used powder if I really want an intense brow look.

Last lot I promise!
I have Chocolate Eye Liner by H&M. Nice enough brown.
2 Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liners. One in black the other in blue. I like these ok. Not that great as I'm not a huge fan of the felt tip applicator, so I'm using them up. I'd like to mention I got these when they were a freebie with Glamour magazine (I think it was. Can't remember as it was back last summer).
Natural Collection Eye liner in white. Not a big fan as it's a bit crumbly.
Finally 17 Eye Khol in black. This one has a lot of sentimental value for me as it's what brought me around on eyeliner. I could never get it the way I wanted it to, then I used this and I've worn eyeliner almost everyday since. However, I have a lot of black pencil eyeliners so it's time to use this guy up. I never even use these for my upper lashline anymore as it tends to smudge.

These products live in a box on my table while the rest of my collection lives in a basket under it. So there we go! I had to give myself lot's of options as I knew that if I just picked a few, I would not use them that much.

Let me know what you think of project 10 pan! Also, there's a new tab next to my About page where I'll be posting updates and links to reviews of things I've finished. It's P10P. But so far there isn't much on there.

Signing off now

  1. I like this idea, it's much more reasonable than a spending ban and actually will probably make you think about your spending habits! I think I'll try it :) good luck!
